Top Hindi Series of 2020

Since March 2020, a lot of the Indian audience made a classic switch to OTT platforms by buying monthly to yearly subscriptions of their preferred platforms. It was pretty clear that nowadays, entertainment is a thirst that only OTT platforms can quench. With a surge in the online viewership, creators decided to make good shows by taking the leap of faith. Such legendary shows have been created over the time with a captivating story and the Indian audience have shown their love and support to such shows.

In this post, I’ll be stating the top Hindi (Indian) series that in my opinion were a class apart.

Now, there were a lot of shows which I cannot possibly add in this list and I would be mentioning them in the latter part of the post. Also, watching every new show is just next to impossible and hence there is a slight possibility that I might have skipped a few good ones.

Nevertheless, here is the list for the top 5 Hindi series that released in 2020 :

1) Mirzapur Season 2

A series that created so much hype after the release of its first season, Mirzapur season 2 does live up to its hype and rarely gives the viewers any scope for disappointment. Fans were waiting for the 2nd season since a long time and fortunately we got to see the revenge and deceitful characters come back in 2020 itself. Don’t quote me on this but there are rumours that there will be a season 3 and in my personal opinion, the ending of season 2 was damn good but the viewers were left with a feeling of wanting some more action and drama. The plot of season 2 is quite simple which makes it easier to digest. Some new characters in season 2 make the show even more worthwhile and with another season in the future, their character development will be something to wait for.

2) Asur : Welcome to Your Dark Side

Asur was the first show I watched in the initial days of lockdown and to be honest, I was completely blown away by the compelling storyline. The concept of connecting mythology and murders of some unrelated people is what makes the story so unexpectedly good. Arshad Warsi has played the role of Dhananjay Rajput, a senior forensic expert in CBI and this simply showed us that he is a gem of an actor. Barun Sobti has done a great job too. His acting seems pretty convincing and you can literally feel his emotions while he is cracking the case. The suspense at the end was unpredictable and Amey Wagh nailed it.

I’m not gonna spoil the mystery but on a serious note, if you haven’t watched this show then do yourself a favour and go watch it. Trust me its the most binge-worthy shows of 2020 and I’m eagerly waiting for its Season 2.

3) Scam 1992 : The Harshad Mehta Story

Have you heard of shows that have an underrated cast and yet they end up to be the highest rated show? Well with an IMDb rating of 9.5, Scam 1992 became an example of a biographical show that put SonyLIV on the highest pedestal in the “OTT Platform” list. Pratik Gandhi, an actor who is going places and winning hearts for his superb acting as Harshad Mehta is the backbone of this show. The confidence with which Pratik has portrayed this character shows what an exemplary actor he is. With an hour-long 10 episode series, a lot of obsolete concepts regarding the BSE Stock Markets and Banking world have been explained and how Harshad Mehta used his skills to utilise certain flaws in the system to make huge profits in the trading world. The story in its simplest form is about how Harshad mehta went from rags to riches and made a scam of 5,000 crore in the year 1992 which became the biggest headline of Indian news and how all the people involved in it decided to make Harshad Mehta as the scapegoat. In times where there are ‘n’ number of scammers and fraudsters roaming around freely, Hansal Mehta, a director of great expertise has made a show that brings back the greatest scam of all times. A special mention for the background music/theme composed by Achint which is considered to be one of the finest themes ever created. The theme has a motivational vibe to it and I've kept it as my alarm tone.

Harshad Mehta was known as the “Bachchan of Stock Market” and was always referred as the “Big Bull”. Ironically, Abhishek Bachchan will be portraying the same character in the movie named “The Big Bull”and the digital rights of the movie is subsequently bought by Disney+Hotstar.

4) Samantar

Before I start by writing a small review, I would like to make it clear that this show is also available in Hindi but I decide to watch it in Marathi to get the real essence of the characters. Swwapnil Joshi, with his performance of Kumar Mahajan has proved that this man can do his job. His presence on screen is so captivating and his dialogue delivery is on point. The mysterious truth behind the twist and turns in his life makes him to go through certain trials and tribulations which ultimately makes him believe in superstitions and unnecessary signs to lead his life in a more significant and peaceful way. The connection between Sudharshan Chakrapani and Kumar Mahajan’s life is the biggest getaway for me as it questions the mere possibility of how 2 people from different generations can lead the same life. This show got me hooked since March and I’m waiting for what mystery unravels in the life of Kumar Mahajan in season 2 of Samantar. But the question still remains that will there be a season 2 and when will it be released?

5) JL50

India’s first sci-fi series related to time travel seems pretty unrealistic and unimaginable. After watching countless shows and movies related to the same topic, I was having zero curiosity but still I decided to give it a try. Well with just 4 episodes, the series pretty much managed to stitch the characters in a particular aspect and made this tough concept of time travel seem understandable and watchable. A plane used for time travel, comes back after 35 years and brings certain set of questions that cannot be answered without understanding the science and history connected to it.

I’ve added this in the list because I feel, we as Indians appreciate every little thing that Hollywood does but when we do it, a lot of flak is thrown. So this is my way of showing support to such experimental and visionary artists that are currently in the process of creating revolutionary projects .
