Tumbbad - 2018's Most Underrated Movie?

A movie with a spooky theme and a great message.....well count me in.

I was just scrolling through YouTube one day and stumbled across the trailer of a movie named "Tumbbad". The trailer itself gave some serious vibes of suspense and thriller dripping right from the start . A movie that took almost 7 years in the making and more then a decade for writing the script must have zero plot holes. Well the movie is very well designed but to be honest a movie without any plot holes is not a movie. Before you read this let me tell you if you haven't watched this movie and have a strict no spoiler policy then please watch it and then read this.

This movie has 3 chapters each basically portraying a specific generation. There is a gap of 14-15 years between each chapter. As the chapters starts to pass by we get to know the greed of each generation increasing to such an extent where it causes fatal damage.

The movie starts with an animated story of Hastar, the first child of Devi. Devi created 160 million gods but loved her first son Hastar. Hastar was very greedy. He wanted all the goddess' gold and food for himself. He somehow acquired all the gold but when he tried to take away the food, he was attacked by remaining gods. Devi saved Hastar from the blow on only one condition that he will never be worshiped. Another catch was that he can only be fed but can never touch food on his own.
This story is narrated by Vinayak Rao (Sohum Shah) to his son in the beginning of the final chapter.
Now you guys must be thinking why is the above story being told to us and in what way is it connected to the story. So let me give a short gist of all the 3 chapters.

Chapter 1 shows us the family and childhood of Vinayak. There is a monstrous being, their grandmother who has become immortal because she was accidentally touched by Hastar. If you are touched by Hastar you are cursed. The curse makes you immortal but it turns you into a monster. Vinayak is greedy and feels that if he can acquire that gold he can get rich. He tries to confront his grandmother, who like Hastar is always hungry by asking her how to get the gold from the Mansion. As she is hungry she tries to eat Vinayak. Scared by such horrific act Vinayak tries to remember the mantra his mother had given him so that his grandmother becomes unconscious and ends up sleeping. The mantra is "SO JAA WARNA HASTAR AA JAEGA". Due to the death of Sarkar and Vinayak's younger brother, His mother decides to leave to Tumbbad and go to Pune.

Chapter 2 shows us adult Vinayak who returns to Tumbbad after almost 15 years. Filled with the thirst for the treasure he goes to his old wrecked house where he finds his grandmother in a condition worst then what it was 15 years back. With all the possible tricks he finally gets the secret of how to get the gold coins. Within a year or so he becomes rich and lives a happy life.

Chapter 3 is the final chapter wherein Vinayak is old and wants his  son to continue getting the coins from Tumbbad. Unfortunately his son has a weak leg which makes his movements a bit slow. He trains his son and takes him to Tumbbad for a real experience. After that follows a series of unfortunate events. Well there's a lot happening in this movie that I've skipped so that the thrill of this rare Bollywood movie is not ruined.

A great script, some new talented bunch of actors, amazing direction and perfect locations have made this movie a must watch for all those who hate the same old Bollywood cliches and  wish to watch something new. With an 8.5 rating on IMDb this movie beats Race 3 and Thugs of Hindostan in the area of logic but unfortunately gets beaten up at the box-office.  I pity those people who watched the latter films in the theatre and missed a mind blowing film like Tumbbad.
