Meri Pyaari Bindu : A Tale of Unrequited Love
Even though Meri Pyaari Bindu was not widely accepted by the audience and as usual critics had their own shot at this movie, I decided to give it a try myself. Last night I finally saw Meri Pyaari Bindu which was released in 2017.I know this may sound a bit weird but I'm always in search of a good romantic film and this movie was a breath of fresh air. I genuinely liked how it broke and questioned certain stereotypical ideas of friendship that has been fed to us by all the Bollywood romantic movies for ages. I mean we all want a happy ending right- Boy meets girl, they fall in love, fight some odds and voila they live happily ever after. Meri Pyaari Bindu is exactly opposite of that. It questions what reality is and whether "Happily ever after" even exists in the real world.
Its just surreal that someone you love with all your heart may never reciprocate that love to you and that's acceptable by all means. Well without any doubt it is heartbreaking but sometimes you just move on and let nature take its course.
Coming back to the film, the plot seems too simple and cliched but trust me its not.The main lead Abhimanyu Roy (Ayushmann Khurrana) who in the present day is writing erotic horror novels for a living finds himself attracted back towards Bindu (Parineeti Chopra). Bindu was his neighbour and they grew up together, which makes him even more nostalgic as he goes back and tries to write the story titled "Meri Pyaari Bindu". From mixtapes to crazy car rides, from an adopted dog named Devdas to Bindu's 2 ring emergency call, they have lived it all together. Their bonding as friends is what makes it even more difficult to understand why friendship may or may not lead to love. Its our expectations as an individual which makes us hurt someone for our own selfish needs. May be that's one of the reasons why it felt so relatable.
The characters may not be perfect but their story is and that's exactly what Director Akshay Roy shows here. Director Akshay Roy has shown Kolkata and Mumbai in their rawest form possible which makes you fall in love with the ethnicity. With a story that spawns from Abhi and Bindu's childhood to the time they meet for the last time on the terrace room a.k.a their Chhath wala Kamra, you get the feeling of how happiness can help you move on. Yeah...It's not resentment but a sense of letting go of something you held for a long time makes it easier for you to move on. It may leave a scar but every now and then you can wash that scar down with the wonderful memories you had.
The songs are just beyond imagination. Hareyaa is still one of the most played songs in my playlist. Rest all the songs including the one's that are on the mixtapes are just heavenly. Take a bow Sachin-Jigar for such a beautiful composition. You can easily add these songs to your playlist without thinking twice.
Coming to the performances, both Ayushmann and Parineeti have done a great job. The chemistry is just bang on. As the lead, Ayushmann really makes us feel every bit of emotion he feels. His dialogue "Pyar karna bahut log sikhate hai ... par afsoos us pyar ko bhulate kaise hai ... yeh saala koi nahi sikhata " hit me pretty hard. There are more such dialogues which stick to your mind and your heart is overwhelmed by it.
I guess its time to end this review. This is the first time I've provided certain elements of spoilers but honestly you will see them coming. Watch it and feel it if you can.
