Dil Bechara hits hard

"Perhaps the difference between what is miserable, and that, which is spectacular, lies in the leap of faith"- Sushant Singh Rajput

Dil Bechara starts with the above quote by the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput (SSR) and that is the exact moment you realise that the movie is going to be an emotional roller coaster ride. Writing about this makes me sad, so as a token of appreciation I'll just state facts and the things I liked about the movie. This will be my heartfelt note to the late actor who has given us great movies like Kai Po Che, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Kedarnath, Chhichhore, etc.

To begin with Dil Bechara, we all know it is an adaptation of "The Fault in Our Stars".
If by any chance you have read "The  fault in out stars" by John Green or watched the Hollywood  adaptation with the same name, you know how it ends. Although I was not a fan of the movie but watching SSR play the role of Manny (Augustus in the book and in the movie) left me teary-eyed. My friends who have read the book have often found some sort of connection with Augustus' death and  I was never able to make sense out of it. The reason for that was simply my age and my understanding. Honestly when I watched TFIOS in 2014, I was angry on how I wasted my time watching something that really made no sense. No offence to anyone who has read the book as I'm pretty sure it is a good book and John Green is a great author. When I watched the movie I was merely 15 and still the ending pretty much didn't hit me.

Now I'm 21 and Dil Bechara did everything that TFIOS(2014) couldn't do for a 15 year old guy. It had all the emotions that I remember missing out while watching the 2014 version, it had no cringey songs and  even though I knew how it would end, for once I wished director Mukesh Chhabra might have changed the ending. Now I realise that why the people who read the book were actually not able to cope with Augustus' death.

Leaving the predictability part aside, I still remember that TFIOS was more than 2 hours long (2h 13m) and by the time it came to an end I was completely pissed. Dil Bechara crams it up and gives a crisp runtime of 1h 41m with beautiful songs and greater depth in storytelling.

Director Mukesh Chhabra, often known in the industry as a casting director, helmed this project in  2017. Honestly I was surprised to see that a debutant director actually ended up making a beautiful film. Although he did have a lot of source material but still he made it more appealing to the Indian audience by adding a few desi ingredients in it. In an interview recently Chhabra stated that he had launched SSR in Bollywood as an actor and SSR launched him (Chhabra) as a director. The kind of circle SSR completed before leaving us forever shows the kind of man he was.

Sanjana Sanghi gives a powerful performance as a newcomer. Although she has a done a few films but this was her first film as the leading lady. A movie like this which is completely on the shoulders of a newcomer proved that Sanjana can become a bankable actor in the future.

A.R Rahman once again creates magic with his songs and background score. Songs are the backbone of such movies and if you get that right then almost half of your job is done. A.R Rahaman is a legendary music composer and we all are well aware about that. So when I got that news that Rahman was going to compose songs for this movie, I instantly knew that my playlist was about to get updated. The only difference is now the songs have more impact as these were the last set of songs that SSR swayed to.

Dil Bechara became a special film because it was SSR's last film. It made all of us realise that SSR was a brilliant actor, an intelligent soul and an emotional human being.

SSR wherever you are....we will always miss you and your smile.
Keep spreading the love and keep spreading the happiness.
