Salaar - Rebel Star's Comeback

 Hey Readers,

Today we will deep dive into the world of Khansaar.

A review for Salaar : Part 1 - Ceasefire is already live on my YouTube channel AP's World of Cinema.

Do check out the video by clicking here. (Review)

1) Rebel Star's Comeback

Post success of Baahubali, Prabhas Anna was unable to give a hit.

His script choices were unique but somewhere those movies couldn't live up to Rajamouli's Magnum Opus Baahuabli (The Beginning and The Conclusion)

Prabhas’ previous flick Saaho was still watchable; Radhe Shyam was unbearable and I didn't have the courage to watch Adipurush.

Salaar in my opinion is still better than a lot of flicks that we have seen in recent times especially the ones that Prabhas Anna has done.

And yes, I do agree the action is senseless and over the top but what did you expect from Prabhas Anna. He is a freaking beast and for someone of that stature, it is easy to pull off a role like Baahubali or Salaar.

After this, I'm actually pumped for Kalki 2898 AD which is releasing on 9th May 2024.

2) The Storyline

Before its release, Salaar was touted to be a remake of Prashant Neel's debut films Ugramm.

For the uninitiated like me who haven't watched Ugramm, you'll surely consider the world of Salaar to be quite captivating. The Core of Ugramm and Salaar might be same i.e. friendship but apart from that the entire storyline is different.

Also, throughout the move you'll find elements similar to the theme and setting of KGF but again there is no connection whatsoever with KGF.

Prashant Neel in a recent interview said that he had faced a lot of problems during the making of Ugramm and I guess, this might be his way of using the core, the crux of Ugramm to create something on a larger scale post the success of KGF.

I sat for 2h 55m (175 minutes) and the movie, not even once felt boring or laggy. Major shoutout to Prashant Neel for the world building that engulfs you into it. The action set pieces were brilliant especially the Kaali Maa scene.

A large consensus had problems with the color tone but surprisingly I didn't feel it was too dark. This is Prashant's style of filmmaking and we have to accept it. It’s a tad bit in sync with Zack Snyder's style of Filmmaking. Some people will genuinely enjoy it and some people will just blatantly shit on it. Just one grouse though, Prashant Anna if you're seeing this then please don't put that 2s black screen transition during fights. It just pulls away the viewers’ attention.

This is just an observation.

Also, if Animal would not have been released 3 weeks prior to the release of Salaar then Salaar would've easily grossed a 1000cr in box office.

As of today, Salaar made on a budget of ₹270 crore has grossed approximately ₹715 crore which is definitely a great number in terms of BO collections.

 3) Casting

Prithviraj Sukumaran has done a fab job with whatever screen time he has. To stand next to Prabhas you have to be physically on that same spectrum.

If you're not familiar with his work then do check out these Malayalam films: Ayyappanum Koshiyum, Koode, Jana Gana Mana, Memories, 7th Day and Bro Daddy.

Also, I'm Looking forward to watch Aadujeevitham - The Goat Life.

Shruti Haasan doesn't leave a mark and post interval it just feels like she is a part of the audience eagerly listening to the story of Deva and Vardha amidst the political collapse in Khansaa.

I genuinely liked bobby SImha's character arc and how it justifies his reasons for starting the political conflict in Khansaar.

Sriya Reddy needs to be mentioned for her powerful performance. The plan she hatches in order to bring Deva against Vardha will be the plotline for Salaar 2 - Shouryaanga Parvam

The movie is stacked with multiple characters and doesn't give a lot of screen time to them but I guess that issue will be highlighted in the sequel.

 4) The BGM

The BGM might not be solid but it does leave an impact. I still remember, when the instal reviews had come out, people had bashed Ravi Basrur's BGM but somehow, I did enjoy it. If there is a top 20 list of BGM's that I like then Salaar's BGM will definitely be in that list. Although, I've to mention that it does resemble the slow BGM of Chennai Express to some extent.

 5) Conclusion

So, all in all, I'm happily giving Salaar 3.5/5 stars for its story, execution, Prashant Neel's Vision and the deadly Prabhas- Prithviraj Duo.

The only thing stopping me from giving it 4 stars is the lack of emotions which Prashant had surprisingly nailed in KGF.
