Ford v Ferrari : A Fuel Based Drama
Ford and Ferrari are both one of the biggest producers of cars bought by people either for travelling, racing or just for show purpose. This story is based on the most fierce rivalry between Ford and Ferrari that very few know about and it was time the world knew who Ken Miles is.
More than the casting, I was happy to see that this movie was directed by James Mangold. James Mangold has directed some of the coolest flicks like Logan, Knight and Day, Walk the line and may more. Making a movie on racing that too a biopic is a difficult job and Mr. Mangold somewhat got all the elements right.
Christian Bale and Matt Damon are in their best form for sure and clearly created magic. Come on man you got Christian Bale, the most versatile and method actor that Hollywood or for that matter the entire world of Cinema has witnessed on screen. Matt Damon is no less. He has done some of the finest works in the history of cinema proving that he was appropriate for the role.
What can an insult do to your ego?
Well Henry Ford II was insulted by Ferrari which led to the start of Ford as a race car production company. Earlier, Ford was meant to build cars that common people use for travelling and not racing.
Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) on getting the green signal from Mr.Ford, hires Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon),who won the Le Mans in 1959 but had to stop racing due to a heart condition. Carroll thinks of his old friend Ken Miles who is an A-level racer and a struggling mechanic. Carroll takes Ken's help in building and testing the cars which may be eligible for Le Mans. This movie follows the entire trajectory of vindictive people using their positions to ruin someone's efforts. After facing a lot of rejections and feuds, Carroll Shelby gets direct orders from Mr.Ford to put Ken Miles behind the wheels.
Now Le Mans is no piece of cake. It is a freaking 24 hour race organised by Automobile club de l'Ouest (ACO). Also Know as the Grand Prix of endurance and efficiency, awards a win to the car that covers maximum distance in 24 hours.
With Ken Miles behind the wheel and Shelby having his own pit crew, Victory is eminent right?
Well that's not the case over here. With each lap passing by, the politics involved make Shelby and Ken take decisions which may sabotage their careers. Ken Miles becomes successful in defeating the Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini and now all the 3 cars currently on the racetrack are of Ford.
Seeing this as win-win situation Henry Ford decides to take a call of getting all the 3 cars to finish the race together. Ken, who's against of this crazy idea, ends up doing it thinking that with all the lap records he might win. To his surprise, Le Mans is won by Mclaren on the basis of technicality.
Heartbroken Ken feels grateful and happy that Carroll gave him a chance to race in one of the most prestigious events.
While testing a car, due to brake failure, Ken dies in front of his son,Carroll and the entire crew . Well the movie does end on an emotional note but its worth the watch.
Ford v Ferrari had 4 Academy Award nominations namely Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. For his performance, Christian Bale was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Drama and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in Leading Role.
Initially, it was going to star Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in the original screenplay by Jason Keller but the project fell apart. For a movie made on a budget of $97.6 million, it grossed around $225 million.
I guess the movie was able to create the magic that it was expected to create. It did hit the right chords as the rage, the speed and the freaking adrenaline was just coming out of the screen.
Even with all the above mentioned positive thoughts about this film, I've given a snippet of IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes for whomsoever it may concern to.
