How Ratsasan changed the face of Psychological Thrillers in the Indian Cinema
Seldom do you come across movies that keep you on the edge of the seat and its been years since big budgeted Bollywood movies tried doing it. I had to find a solution for this and unknowingly I stumbled upon this 2018 gem named Ratsasan. Even though the movie is in Tamil, it still managed to keep me hooked. I had watched it a long time back but recently my friend suggested me to review it.
So today I'll be reviewing Ratsasan and will probably give you reasons to watch this masterpiece.
Plot:
After constant rejections in his attempt to become a filmmaker and pressure from his family, Arun
Kumar (Vishnu Vishal) ends up becoming a police officer. The story revolves around a psycho killer who is murdering school girls and how with every step Arun comes closer to catching the culprit.
Well the plot looks old and overused and some may even say its cliched but trust me its not. When it comes to storytelling, this movie keeps you glued even though you might suspect or predict some twists. I feel that's why this movie got all the recognition which it truly deserves. It shows us how flawed human beings are and how a person's past can cause that person to become a maniac. Nowadays maintaining one's sanity is difficult and presumably people taking wrong things into consideration is the major cause of most of the crimes we see today. After undergoing a lot of trauma, how the antagonist transforms into a demon, which is the literal translation of Ratsasan makes the entire movie more believable. You feel bad for the antagonist but somewhere his wrongdoings are not justifiable.
Ratsasan brilliantly takes our emotions into consideration which basically helps in viewing it. In thriller movies, the background score plays an important role in creating the tension. We should actually appreciate Ghibran for creating such a beautiful background score which is not forced in any sense or added without deliberation.
The character of Arun was supposed to be played with confidence and Vishnu Vishal does it with conviction. He pulls of the character with ease and gives the best performance of his life.
I'm clearly falling short of words and I guess its time to end this review.
Before signing out, the director Ram Kumar gets a big thumbs up for writing and directing a masterpiece worth spending our time on.
With an IMDb rating of 8.7/10, it was ranked at #2 in the IMDb Top Indian Movies of the Year 2018.
Well this should suffice as a reason for everyone to watch it and its available on Hotstar for free which makes it easier to view.
